Why is an IPTV box itself legal?

Because it is just a small computer for your TV. An Android TV box, a MAG box and a Fire TV Stick all run apps and play video over your internet, like a Smart TV or a laptop does. Licensed providers use the same hardware: the Bell Fibe TV app, for example, runs on the Fire TV Stick, Apple TV and Android TV devices.

When does a box become a legal problem?

When it is sold "fully loaded": the seller has already set up apps that stream channels, movies or live sports without permission from the rights holders. Canadian courts have acted against those sellers:

• 2016: in Bell Canada v. 1326030 Ontario Inc. (iTVBox.net), 2016 FC 612, the Federal Court ordered several retailers to stop advertising and selling pre-loaded set-top boxes. The Federal Court of Appeal upheld the order in 2017.
• 2021: in Bell Canada v. L3D Distributing Inc., 2021 FC 832, sellers of pre-loaded boxes and IPTV subscriptions were ordered to pay more than $29 million in statutory damages.

Is streaming TV on an Android box legal in Canada?

It depends on the service, not the box. Watching Crave, DAZN or your TV provider's app on an Android box is as legal as watching it on a phone. Are cheap "fully loaded" boxes safe?

Often not, and that is a separate risk from the law. In June 2025, the FBI warned that millions of devices, including off-brand TV streaming boxes, carried malware called BADBOX 2.0, sometimes before they were sold. Warning signs included no-name boxes marketed as giving free access to content, and boxes that ask you to turn off Google Play Protect.

• Buy a well-known device, such as a Fire TV Stick, a Google TV device or an Nvidia Shield.
• Install apps only from official app stores or the developer's own website.
• Keep Google Play Protect on and install system updates.
