What decides whether IPTV works abroad?

Three things decide it: your provider's rules, the country you are in and the network you connect to.

• Your provider's rules. Some services limit where you can stream. TV apps from Canadian cable and phone companies usually keep live TV inside Canada because of content rights. Rogers, for example, describes its Xfinity Stream app as a way to watch anywhere in Canada.
• The country. Laws on streaming differ from country to country, and some countries filter the internet or block streaming services. We cannot give legal advice for other countries, and you are responsible for following the laws where you are, as our terms and conditions explain.
• The network. Hotel, cruise ship, campground and hospital Wi-Fi is shared by many people and is often slow in the evening. Some of these networks limit or block video, so ask the front desk or the staff about the guest network rules.

How do I get the best picture when travelling?

Test early, check the speed in your room and bring a device that is already set up. These five habits prevent most travel problems:

• Test on the first evening, not on the night of the big game.
• Run a speed test in your room. Plan for about 10 Mbps that stays steady for Full HD. If it is lower, pick an HD version of the channel when your list has one.
• Sign in to hotel Wi-Fi on a phone or laptop. Many hotels make you accept terms on a web page first, which a streaming stick may not show well.
• Bring the app already logged in on your phone or tablet, so you never type a server URL on a hotel TV remote.
• Expect some delay. The further you are from the servers, the longer channels take to start.
