IPTV Questions Channels and content
Can you watch local channels on IPTV?
What counts as a local channel in Canada?
A local channel is a TV station that serves one city or region and makes its own local news. Canada's main English and French networks have stations in most big cities. Every station airs its network's shows, then adds local news, weather and traffic, often around supper time and again late in the evening.
Specialty channels work differently. A national news channel, a sports channel or a kids channel sends the same signal across the country, so it is not "local" even if it is Canadian. The CRTC's page on local and community TV explains how local stations fit into Canadian broadcasting.
Which local channels does IPTV Nord carry?
IPTV Nord carries 7 local channel groups, and every plan includes all of them. We describe them by region rather than by station:
| Local group | Most useful for | Language |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto and the GTA | Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Vaughan, Hamilton | English |
| Ottawa and Gatineau | Ottawa, Gatineau and the Outaouais | English and French |
| Montreal and Quebec City | Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, Quebec City | French and English |
| Vancouver and BC | Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Victoria, Kelowna | English |
| Calgary and Edmonton | Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer | English |
| Winnipeg and the Prairies | Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina | English |
| Atlantic Canada | Halifax, Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John, St. John's, Charlottetown | English and French |
Because every group comes with every plan, you are not limited to your own city. A family that moved from Halifax to Calgary can still watch Halifax news, or check the weather before a drive to see relatives. Our IPTV Canada city pages show what the service looks like in each area.
What if your town is not on the list?
You will usually watch the station from the nearest big city. Its newscast and weather map often cover the towns around it too. Someone in Kingston, for example, would look in the Toronto and the Ottawa groups.
If you only need local news and weather, there are free options too. An antenna picks up local stations over the air with no monthly bill, if you are within range of a tower. The public broadcaster's free CBC Gem app also streams its local CBC stations live with a free account. Many homes use one of these next to IPTV.
Which IPTV service has the most local channels?
No provider publishes a fair count of local stations, so the best service for you is the one that carries your city's news and plays it smoothly. A long list of cities means little if yours is missing.
Check it yourself before you pay. Search your city in the channel groups on our home page, then take the free 24-hour trial and open your local group at supper time. Make sure the newscast is today's, and that the TV guide shows the right times for your time zone. For the full picture of what else comes in a plan, see what channels you get with IPTV.
Related questions people ask
Why does the TV guide show the wrong time for my local news?
It is almost always a time zone setting. IPTV apps show guide times using the clock on your TV or streaming stick, so check that the device is set to your own time zone first. If the times are still off by an hour or more, message the provider's support team so they can check the guide on their side.
Can I get local channels in French on IPTV?
Yes. In IPTV Nord, three local groups include French as well as English: Montreal and Quebec City, Ottawa and Gatineau, and Atlantic Canada. Choose the Full Channels package when you order, because English Channels Only leaves the French groups out. Our support team can also help you in French.
