What is the best stream format for IPTV on a Firestick: TS or HLS?
What is the difference between TS and HLS?
Both carry the same channel; they differ in how the video travels to your stick:
- TS (MPEG-TS, links ending in .ts) is one continuous stream over a single connection. It starts fast with very little delay, but when the connection hiccups, the player must reconnect, which shows as a freeze.
- HLS (links ending in .m3u8) cuts the video into segments of a few seconds and lists them in a small playlist file. The player downloads them one by one and keeps a few in reserve, so a short dip in speed often goes unnoticed. The cost is a delay of several seconds behind live.
| TS (MPEG-TS) | HLS (m3u8) | |
|---|---|---|
| How video arrives | One continuous stream | Short segments of a few seconds |
| Channel start | Usually faster | Can take a moment longer |
| Delay behind live | Very small | Several seconds |
| On weak Wi-Fi | Freezes when the connection hiccups | Rides out short dips better |
| Try it for | Live sports on a steady connection | Channels that stutter or will not start |
HLS was created by Apple; Wikipedia explains it in more depth.
Where do you change the stream format on a Firestick?
It depends on the app, and not every app has the option:
- TiviMate: for an Xtream Codes playlist, open Settings, Playlists, pick your playlist and look for the output format in its Xtream Codes options. Choose MPEG-TS or HLS, then reopen the channel.
- Smarters-style apps: open Settings, then Stream Format, and choose MPEGTS (.ts) or HLS (.m3u8).
- An M3U link: the end of the link often says output=ts or output=m3u8. Ask your provider for the other version if you want to switch.
- VLC and Kodi: they play whatever the link sends, so you change the link, not a setting.
Menu names vary by version. Our TiviMate guide covers its other settings.
What should you try when a stream stutters on a Firestick?
Change one thing at a time and test the same channel for a few minutes:
- Check if it is one channel or all of them. One channel points to that stream; all of them point to your connection.
- Switch the format from TS to HLS, or back.
- Raise the buffer. In TiviMate, open Settings, Playback, Buffer size and try Medium or Large.
- Change the video decoder in the same Playback menu, from hardware to software or back.
- Restart the stick and the modem, then move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or plug in Amazon's Ethernet adapter.
- Tell your provider the channel, the time and your device, so they can check the stream.

Related questions people ask
Does HLS give better picture quality than TS?
Usually not. With most IPTV providers, the TS and HLS versions of a channel carry the same video, so resolution and sharpness match. What changes is how the video travels: HLS copes better with an unsteady connection, and TS stays closer to live. If the picture looks soft, check whether you opened the HD or the 4K version of the channel.
Which stream format is best for live sports?
TS, if your connection is steady. It keeps the delay behind live very small, so a goal does not reach your TV after the score alert on your phone. If TS freezes on busy evenings, HLS is the better trade: a few seconds of delay is easier to live with than a frozen power play.
