Why do dedicated IPTV players beat Kodi for live TV?

Kodi was built to organize and play your own movies and music, and live TV is an add-on to it. An IPTV player is built around live TV from the start. On a Firestick, that shows in four ways:

• Setup. In TiviMate you type one Xtream Codes login, and channels, the guide, movies and series load together. Kodi's live TV add-on needs an M3U link and a separate guide link, entered deep in its settings.
• The guide. TiviMate's guide scrolls like a cable box and switches channels quickly, with favourites and catch-up in its Premium version.
• The remote. Everyday actions sit one or two clicks away instead of several menus down.
• Memory. A Fire TV Stick has 2 GB of memory or less, and Kodi with a large library or a heavy skin can feel slow on it.

Kodi still has real strengths: it is free, open source and excellent for a home movie collection. For live channels, most people are happier with TiviMate or another player from our list of the best IPTV apps for a Firestick.

Can Kodi play IPTV the proper way?

Yes. Kodi's own PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, from the official Kodi repository, plays a provider's M3U link with a TV guide. In Kodi, open Settings, Add-ons, My add-ons, PVR clients, enable it, then paste your M3U link and your guide (XMLTV) link. IPTV Nord customers can ask Live Chat for the guide link.

Two Firestick limits apply. Kodi is not in the Amazon Appstore, so on Fire OS models you install the Android version from the official download page on kodi.tv with the Downloader app. On Vega OS sticks, such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, Kodi cannot be installed at all. Are third-party Kodi add-ons safe to use?

The add-ons that promise free live channels, movies and sports are the risky part of Kodi, not Kodi itself. They come from unofficial sources, and most pull streams that nobody paid the rights for. Team Kodi says on its About page that Kodi provides no content and that the project does not support bootleg or illegally sourced material.

• They break often. Sources vanish without warning, often in the middle of the big game.
• They carry security risks. Code from unknown sources runs on your device like any app you install, and some add pop-ups or worse.
• Amazon is blocking them. Since late 2025, Amazon blocks sideloaded apps it identifies as giving access to pirated content.
