What do you need before you set up IPTV?

You need a device, an internet connection, a player app and a login from your IPTV provider. The login comes in one of three forms:

How do I set up IPTV, step by step?

On almost every device, IPTV setup follows the same six steps. Only the app and the menu names change.

1. Connect the device to the internet

   Use an Ethernet cable if the TV or box has a port. On Wi-Fi, pick the 5 GHz network.

2. Install a player app

   Get it from your device's own app store, or from the developer's official site. The table below shows where to start for each device.

3. Choose your login type

   The app asks what you want to add: pick Xtream Codes (sometimes called "Login with Xtream Codes API"), M3U playlist or portal, to match your welcome email.

4. Type the login exactly

   Copy the server URL with http:// at the start and the port at the end. Capital letters in the username and password matter, and a single extra space breaks the login.

5. Let the channels load

   Give the app a minute or two to count the channels and fill in the TV guide.

6. Check the guide and the time

   Open the TV guide and compare it with a channel you know. If shows are an hour off, fix the time zone in the device settings, not in the app.

How do you use IPTV once it is set up?

You use IPTV much like cable: pick a channel group, choose a channel, and check the TV guide to see what is on next. Most apps share the same main areas:

• Live TV. Channels are sorted into groups such as sports, news, French, local and international. In most apps, the OK button opens the channel list and up or down changes the channel.
• TV guide (EPG). A grid of what is on now and later, like a cable guide.
• Movies and series. The on-demand library sits in its own section. Pick a title and press play; many apps remember where you stopped.
• Catch-up. On channels that support it, you can replay a show that aired earlier, in apps that offer the feature.
• Favourites. In many apps, holding the OK button on a channel opens its options, where you add it to favourites or hide a group you never watch.

Set up favourites on the first evening. A short list of the ten channels you watch most makes the remote much easier to use.
